Retro Bowl: a five-minute game of football that turns into a ten-season career
The trick of Retro Bowl is what it leaves out. There are no playbooks, no defensive controls and no full 53-man depth chart to drag around. You manage ten key players (twelve if you raise the cap to $200m in the options), two coordinators and three facilities, and everything else on the roster is a rating that follows from those. Game day is the same idea: the ball is snapped, receivers run their routes, and you aim by clicking and dragging away from the man you want. Hold it longer and the throw goes harder and flatter. A three-minute game can swing on one badly timed release, which is why people keep starting one more.
New Star Games shipped it for phones in January 2020 and the browser build followed, made for the Poki catalog. The copy here is that HTML5 build served from retrobowl.app itself, with the ad hooks answered locally so it never waits for a network it cannot reach. There is nothing to install: click CONTINUE, name your coach, take the job. The save is written to this browser, so the same laptop resumes your career next time.
Controls & mechanics
| Action | Control | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Throw | Click and hold, drag away from the target receiver, release | Direction sets the target, drag length sets power — a short drag lobs, a long one fires a bullet |
| Hand off | Click the blue circle at the snap | Gives the ball to the running back; the RB run is the safe call on 3rd and 1 |
| Scramble | Drag the throw backwards | The quarterback tucks and runs; use it when every receiver is covered |
| Side-step | W / S while carrying the ball | Hops the runner up or down a lane to slip a tackle |
| Slow up / dive | A / D while carrying the ball | A dive protects the ball and reaches for the marker; it also ends the play |
| Kick | Click to set power, click again to set direction | Field goals, PATs and punts; the posts are as wide as the hash marks and the faint triangle on the ground shows the line |
| Menus | Click | F.OFFICE for facilities and staff, ROSTER for players, the division table for the schedule |
Tips that save a season
- Your first credits go to the quarterback: Coaching credits are kudos from the owner, not cash, and they arrive with wins and season goals. A QB with poor accuracy makes every drag of the mouse a coin flip, so a better one is the upgrade you feel immediately.
- Rehab before stadium: Tired players fumble, lose morale and pick up injuries, and stamina drains the QB's throwing range within a game. The rehab facility fixes all four; the stadium only keeps the fans happy.
- Coordinators set the floor: Your offense and defense ratings start from the two coordinators before any star is counted. If the defense gives up 35 a game, a better defensive coordinator does more than a single new linebacker.
- Cut toxic players, rest tired ones: A toxic personality drags the whole locker room down after a loss; cutting him raises team morale. A tired starter recovers morale on the bench and comes back sharper.
- Trades close after week 8: Move players and picks before then. Another team will sometimes offer a draft pick for one of yours — take it for anyone on an expiring contract you were not going to extend.
- Out of bounds is a tool: Running out of bounds stops the clock and cannot fumble; throwing the ball away beats a sack. Both matter more in the two-minute drill than any trick play.
Key features
- Front office, not spreadsheets: Ten key players, two coordinators, three facilities and a salary cap. Free agency, a scouted draft, trades and job offers from other teams after year two.
- Play the offense yourself: Passing, running, scrambling and kicking are all in your hands; defense and special-teams coverage run from ratings.
- Morale and condition: Players tire as the season goes on, toxic players poison a losing room, and both feed straight into fumbles, penalties and performance.
- Three-minute games: A full season with playoffs and the Retro Bowl fits inside a study hall. A dynasty takes a semester.
- Saves in the browser: Your career, coaching credits and achievements live in this browser's storage. Same device, same browser, same franchise.

Pro tip: Aim by dragging in the opposite direction of the receiver's run, not toward him, and release as he makes his cut — the ball arrives in stride while the defender is still turning.
