Rocket Soccer Derby swaps the football for a giant ball and the quarterback for a rocket-powered car. Two teams of cars race around a walled stadium, and the only goal is to knock the ball into the other net before the timer runs out. It is fast, a little chaotic and easy to pick up.
It suits a Retro Bowl fan who wants a different kind of match. The rhythm is familiar: attack, defend, watch the clock, and take a chance when the other side leaves a gap. The difference is that you are positioning a vehicle in 3D rather than calling plays.
It runs in the browser with nothing to install. The main menu has Quick Play for a single match and Play League for a run of games. There is also a Garage, a Car Shop and a Customize screen, and coins earned in matches go toward new cars and paint.
Drive with WASD or the arrow keys. The jump and boost keys are not fixed in this write-up, so open the gear icon in the Settings menu to see them before your first match. Press Quick Play, pick your match settings and start.
Each round begins with a kickoff scramble. Steer at the ball, hit it toward the opposing goal, and use jump and boost to reach it when it is in the air. When the other team has the ball, drop back toward your own goal instead of chasing it.
Rugby Rush and Touchdown Rush are closer to the ground game, with running and tackling. Retro Bowl College is the pick if you want the pass-and-score loop that this site is built around. Rocket Soccer Derby is the one to open when you want a looser, more physical match that is closer to soccer.
It works well for short sessions. A single match is quick, so it fits a few spare minutes, and the League mode is there for longer play.
The idea is the same: cars play soccer with a giant ball. This one is a free browser game with Quick Play and League modes.
Drive with WASD or the arrow keys. The jump, boost and camera keys are listed in Settings, under the gear icon.
Earn coins in matches and spend them in the Car Shop. The Customize screen is for paint and looks.
